Pipeline

We strongly believe that early coding on-ramps for girls are crucial to creating an equitable tech workforce and closing the persistent gender gap in tech. Our art-infused curriculum is not only unique, but effective. By adding the ART to Code, CodeHER clubs aim to have words like “creative” and “exciting” replace “boring” and “difficult” in the minds of girls when they think about coding.

CodeHER clubs are weekly school-year coding clubs for girls in grades 3-8 where they learn 3D modeling, game design, mobile apps, website design, how to code their own art pieces, and more. Club members gain programming skills in the first two-thirds of the year that they utilize in a capstone group project – where they build a website, app, or game – at the end of the school year. The weekly clubs not only teach technical skills, but also expose the girls to tech careers and build a sense of community where girls feel included and represented.

We are seeking $500,000 to launch and sustain 50 Code/Art CodeHER Clubs for girls in Miami over the next 3-5 years. These clubs will put at least 1,000 female and gender non-binary students from Title I schools on track for the Miami Tech jobs of the future.

Impact

“Before we started a Code/Art CodeHER Club at the Homestead Title I Migrant Center, many of the students were intimidated of coding because they thought it would be too hard. The club atmosphere, which is one of helping and supporting one another, and the fun lessons have removed those fears. The projects they are doing are INCREDIBLE because they combine art, engineering and coding! The Code/Art Club is opening doors for these girls by teaching them life-changing coding skills, and, on top of that, THEY ARE LOVING IT!”

Mark Godinez, Computer Science Teacher and Code/Art Club Advisor

Current Metrics

We have reached 1,785 girls in our CodeHER program over the past 5 years. Of these, 85% identify as Hispanic or Black.

95% of CodeHER Club members surveyed said they see themselves more as a coder since taking part in a Code/Art CodeHER Club.

52% of CodeHER Club members surveyed said they plan to major or minor in CS in college.
