In the fall of 2023, OATS will open its fourth state-of-the-art Senior Planet Center in Miami’s Wynwood district, offering free technology-themed programs and trainings for older adults with the aim of improving health, social engagement, and financial security while simultaneously creating opportunities for civic participation and creative expression.

Nearly forty percent of US senior citizens lack wireline broadband service at home. Low-income people, immigrants, people of color, and individuals with health challenges report comparatively lower levels of internet access. In addition, people living in areas with high concentrations of poverty are six times less likely to have broadband. Miami-Dade County is home to some of Miami’s most vulnerable older adults and our aim is to assist in closing the digital divide by addressing some of the most striking Census report statistics in the surrounding area that affect low levels of digital literacy and internet adoption: 33% of residents aged 65+ have no home internet subscription; 22% of residents are age 60+ (60 percent of these have incomes under $25,000); 36% of residents aged 65+ live in poverty (45% are Black, 53% are Hispanic/Latino (of any race)

With the launch of Senior Planet Center in Miami, seniors will have a chance to contribute by providing space to showcase their talents, continue learning, and leverage technology to transform themselves and their community. OATS is actively developing sponsors, partners, and philanthropic investors to enable this project to reach its full potential as a resource for older adults in southern Florida.
