The Teacher Accelerator Program (TAP) is a unique career training program that seeks to place qualified teachers in classrooms. Born out of a desire to improve our community, TAP was founded in 2022 by Achieve Miami in collaboration with Teach for America Miami-Dade (TFA M-D) and the University of Miami (UM) to mitigate one of Miami’s most critical needs–the teacher shortage.

TAP consists of 4 components: (1) training via a college/university teaching course, (2) a paid summer internship in partnership with Achieve Miami, M-DCPS, and TFA-MD, (3) certification support, and (4) mentorship throughout the first year teaching. Supplemental sessions provide individuals with skills in classroom management, teaching strategies, lesson planning, as well as teacher wellbeing. Moreover, the program connects new teachers to a network of supportive professionals, and provides resources and support through the hiring process via its mentorship program and additional events.

Impact

Within the first week of TAP we’ve been given an abundance of resources to prepare for teaching. The instructional coaches have shared information and tips on a range of topics from the intricacies of teaching reading to the importance of incorporating special needs students in the classroom. We’ve had the opportunity to work in small groups with our coaches and focus on our personal experiences and goals. I’ve loved working with like minded people who are on a similar path to my own. It’s helped me feel more confident and secure in my teaching abilities. Especially, because I am reminded constantly of why I am doing this. This last day has also been special because through FriYAY we've let loose a little, released tension from the week, had fun and built a special connection with the people in our group. Everything in TAP has felt very intentional and I appreciate how well planned out everything in the program is

2024 Participant

Current Metrics

Over 2 years, 170 TAP participants completed the TAP course and were eligible for the TAP Summer Internship in Years 1 and 2.

97% of TAP participants self-report as feeling supported by TAP throughout their training process

In Year 2, TAP will place at least 125 new teachers in classrooms, exceeding the anticipated goal of placing 100 new teachers.
